Health Tips

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest habits to kick. But we've found some of the best ways to help get you to quit smoking.
Tobacco use is one the largest preventable causes of fatal diseases in the United States. Cigarette smoking takes the lives of over 480,000 people every year and 41,000 of these are from secondhand exposure.

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest habits to kick. But we’ve found some of the best ways to help get you to quit smoking you might not have though of.

Tetris

Playing three minutes of Tetris can stave off the cravings

A study from the scientific journal Appetite showed that playing Tetris for three minutes can stave off your cigarette craving.

The Plymouth University researchers found that craving really on visual imagery. By having their subjects play Tetris. There was a decrease by 24% within the first three minutes of playing the puzzle game.

Video games are a lot of more fun than smoking anyway. If you don’t like playing Tetris, then pick snake or ping pong.

“Tetris reduced the vividness and frequency of craving imagery, as well as craving intensity.”

Milkbones

A woman learned to stop smoking by associating smoking with eating Milkbones for dogs

This may be on the more disgusting solutions but a woman would eat Milkbones every time she wanted a cigarette.

Using the Pavlovian approach for cigarette aversion, you associate cigarette smoking with eating dog bones. It won’t take long before you train your own brain to quit. This may not be the best solution for chain smokers or people who like the taste of Milkbones.

“My cousin smoked for 20 years. She quit in an interesting way—she started eating Milkbone dog biscuits! She chewed on them to kill the craving and she quit.”

Mouth Wash

Nobody likes a person who smells like an ashtray, let alone kissing them.

Every time you feel like smoking a cigarette, swish your mouth out with mouth wash.

There are even some nicotine mouthwashes like Nicorinse that help smokers quit. They can even coat the mouth to prevent the toxic chemicals from getting into the soft tissues of the mouth and into the bloodstream. It can also improve their oral hygiene.

You’ll enjoy the clean feeling you have in your mouth instead of smoke.

“I did it for a few weeks, and my girlfriend liked making out with me a lot more.”

Deprivation

Getting pregnant or withholding the horizontal tango can help you quit

Being in a relationship, you’re significant other can always help support you in any way possible.

Having a reward system could be the best way to finall stop smoking. If you’re a woman, you could get knocked up as well which would prevent you from smoking for nine months. If you don’t your entire family will constantly annoy you with statistics about the damage you’re doing to the unborn child.

“She stopped putting out whenever she knew I was smoking. That got old, real quick. For every day I smoked she wouldn’t touch me for the rest of the day.”

Acupuncture

Fill your face up with needles to suppress your cravings

The 3,500 practice is said to help you focus your “chi” which flows through 12 different key channels in the body. When certain points are blocked it can affect your body’s health.

The pressure points in the ears are effective at suppressing cravings according to the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. Studies show that acupuncture also helps pump out endorphines. There are many ear massage techniques which patients can use when they aren’t being poked full of needles to provide relief from a craving.

Electroshock Therapy

Shock yourself out of the habit by electrocuting yourself

When you first start smoking, you feel nauseous, dizzy and cough. But as you continue to smoke, the nicotine in the cigarettes create the addiction. Auriculotherapy has been found to break the habits associated with nicotine addiction by having a new trigger of pain untrain your body to stop having the urge by associating it with pain.

“The shock isn’t too bad. But don’t tell the doctor’s that otherwise they’ll amp up the voltage.”

Hypnosis

Hypnotherapy opens your mind to different suggestions

Hypnotherapists change thew ay you think so the next time you think about lighting up that next cigarette, you’re repelled by the thought.

Patients are asked to imagine unpleasant outcomes from smoking while they are hypnotized. Hypnotherapists will suggest they think they are being poisoned and to repeat affirmations anytime they have a desire to light one up.

“I am a licensed psychologist in New Jersey. Back in 1976, I already had my doctorate, had some training in hypnosis, and smoked about a pack of cigarettes a day. At a New Year’s Eve party, a friend asked how my hypnosis skills were coming along and if I could stop her from smoking. We spent about an hour with her in a trance. The next week, my friend and I spoke on the phone, and she was smoking. In that moment I realized I had not had one cigarette the entire week. I had hypnotized myself! Once or twice I had the urge, but now I can’t even think of it; I have not had one cigarette in more than 30 years.”

Laser

Shoot your face up with lasers to relieve withdrawal symptoms from cigarettes

Some people use a special, painless laser that is used on certain parts of the body. It produces a calming, relaxing effect which is similar to when the body reacts to nicotine.

Clinics like Innovative Laser Therapy use low-level lasers to target specific pressure points in the body that are related to addiction, metabolism, and stress. The laser is used in specific spots in the face, hands, and wrists to relieve withdrawal symptoms.

“The laser basically stimulates the nerve endings to tell the brain to release a flood of endorphins” according to Frank Pinto, the owner of Innovative Laser Therapy.

Baking Soda Cocktail

Drink baking soda water to curb your appetite

Drinking a mix of baking soda and water twice a day for a week can help curb your appetite for a cig.

Mixing a tablespoon of baking soda with an eight-ounce glass of water twice a day for a week, then once a day the second week has been shown to stop cigarette cravings.

I read a newspaper article quoting a doctor who said to quit smoking, mix a tablespoon of baking soda in an 8-ounce glass of water and drink it, twice a day for the first week, then once a day for the second week. I had been smoking a carton a week then, or about 30 cigarettes a day. I drank two glasses on Sunday and Monday. It tasted like a flat Alka-Seltzer.

Some people even carry a bottle of the mixture and every time they smoke, rinse their mouth out with the mixture.

“On Sunday and Monday I smoked two cigarettes. On Tuesday I think I smoked one cigarette and then quit altogether. I continued to drink the baking soda concoction for the rest of that week. I don’t think I even needed it the second week. I have not had a cigarette in 20 years.”

Swap Hobbies

Do something better with your life, you lazy smoker

Smoking is just a time filler for most people. So replacing a bad habit with a new hobby can be the best way to quit.

By learning how to do a new hobby, you can feel more accomplished with yourself because you actually did something good.

“Why not distract yourself by taking up a new hobby such as learning a new language , trying a new recipe or playing a sport? Or you could get round to doing something you’ve been meaning to do for a while – clearing out your wardrobe, even cleaning the windows! Creating a list of all the things you want to do and ticking something off that list can give you a great sense of achievement!”

Piggy Bank

Pay yourself or your friends to see how much money you rack up

Every time you feel like buying a pack of cigarettes, deposit that money into a piggy bank. At the end of the month check to see how much money you actually saved from not buying cigarettes and spend it on something you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t.

Other monetary solutions are making a bet or having a smoking jar for every time you smoke. Feeling broke or paying your friends when you smoke will make you less inclined to smoke another cigarette.

“The therapy involves attaching tiny medicated herbal seeds or metal studs onto specific points on the outer ear (by using small, discreet plasters), in order for the patient to stimulate those areas everyday by pressing on the balls attached to the ear. Stimulating those areas using the auricular method can maintain the effects of acupuncture treatment in between the sessions, thus helping you to control withdrawal symptoms the moment they occur.”
